SOPHIE SOLOMON

This paper will be posted prior to the Conference.

CV: Sophie Solomon's voice is her violin. Whether she's performing with the LSO
or playing with her own band, her music is a thrilling combination of technique and passion that refuses to be confined by the conventional parameters of the instrument.

Renowned for her high-octane live performances and dubbed 'the Keith Richards of the violin' by one critic, Sophie was a founder member of Oi Va Voi, three times BBC World Music Award nominees, and her album Solomon & Socalled's HipHopKhasene won the German Record Critics' Award for Album of the Year 2004.

Her unique musical vision reaches its full flowering on her self-composed Decca debut solo album Poison Sweet Madeira, released in February 2006, an audacious mix of different styles and influences given purpose and unity by her extraordinary violin playing.  Poison Sweet Madeira features guest appearances by Richard Hawley, KT Tunstall and Ralph Fiennes.  Sophie has also worked with, amongst others, Rufus Wainwright, Heather Nova, Killing Joke, Theodore Bikel, Yasmin Levy and Th'Legendary Shackshakers of Nashville, Tennessee.

Sophie is an internationally renowned teacher of klezmer violin, leading workshops in the
US and Europe.
